In remembrance ...

Leslie deMille Lawrence
July 17, 1928 - April 19, 2010

Perhaps they are not the stars,
but rather openings in heaven
where the love of our lost ones
pours through and shines down upon us
to let us know they are happy.
. . . inspired by an Eskimo legend

Dad to some, Grandfather to others,
like a light so bright,
we all miss your warm smile and giving heart.

One of my goals for this blog is to 'spotlight' a family member now and again with information of their descendants and/or ancestors.  This is the first attempt.

Who is Dorothy Ebel?

Sackville, NB; The Tantramar and Acadian History

Fellow Researchers and Family ... Check out this site.  Mount Allison University hosts this great resource.  Here you can not only find out about life on the Tantramar, but also a historical overview of Acadian life.  As a bonus for family members, many of their records include information on the Lawrence Family lineage.  Below are a few examples.

Retrieval Number: 7001/123
Freeholders of Sackville meeting report, January 16, 1797.
(Elijah Ayers, William Lawrence, Nehemiah Ayers & John Barnes)

Retrieval Number: 7740/2/6/7
West Body Marsh District No. 3
(no. 102 'Mrs. Lawrence)

This site is loaded with more images like this and much more ... a great resource.  Throughout the site I was able to locate family related information in maps, city assessments, wills, meeting minutes, etc. There are other resources as well including personal diaries and vintage photo's of the people and agricultural life on the Tantramar.

Ambler Farm - Wilton Connecticut

Betty Ambler was the last of the Raymond-Ambler family to live at Ambler Farm. She lived there most of her life until her death in 1998. The following year, the Town of Wilton, with overwhelming taxpayer support, purchased 22 acres of this beautiful 200-year-old working farm as part of the open-space initiative. However, because the complex consisted of historic houses, barns and various out-buildings, this acquisition was unlike any other and prompted the town to appoint a steering committee to consider the farm’s future. From this committee, a non-profit group called the Friends of Ambler Farm was formed and a mission crafted to celebrate Wilton's agrarian roots through active-learning programs, sustainable agriculture, responsible land stewardship, and historic preservation.  http://www.amblerfarm.org/default.htm

Betty Ambler was the daughter of Anna Christiana (Schuessler) Ambler ... Aunt to Joyce Anna (Schuessler) Lawrence.  Anna was born on 14 May, 1893 and died on 25 October, 1988.  I can recall briefly meeting Anna with Eileen before we got married, Anna passing shortly thereafter.  Anna married Charles Meeker Ambler on 11 April, 1918. On the 22nd of June, 1919, Elizabeth (Betty) Raymond Ambler was born.  She was the only child born to the union of Charles and Anna.  As you can see from the excerpt above after her parents deaths, Betty continued to live at the farm until her death.  Today the farm is a working agricultural farm providing fresh produce to the local community and providing programs in preserving both the history of farming and the history of the people who lived there.  Ironically, 15 years later, Eileen and I have not been there, so one of my goals this spring is to visit the farm and see what other historical and genealogical finds I might be able to unearth.

Connections

Recent connections ...

I have been in contact with a new cousin ... Betty ...  She is the daughter of John Rasmussen, son of Rudolph Rasmussen, son of Thomas Rasmussen.  John Rasmussen's wife's sister was the first to contact me through Ancestry.com.

Other recent connections have been initiated with the descendants of Bliss Lawrence, (Les' Uncle).  There are are number of relatives still alive in the Clinton, ME area.  I stopped by the farm owned by Robert Lawrence back in March and introduced myself to him.  He looks so much like Les that it was evident they were of the same lineage.
